Contains descriptions of all the diseases to which each part of the horse is laible; the best remedies to be used; treatments for preventing disorders, and "A Copious Alphabetical List fo Medicines". Firm in the binding, wear to the leather at the tips and edges; lacking the rear free endpaper.

Thick 8vo hardcover in original publisher's black glossy leather, ornately blindstamped, spine titled in gilt and circular gilt decoration of three horses on front cover. Marbled endpapers. 600 pp. with glossary of scientific and technical terms, general index and table of symptoms. Single leaf advert tipped in at rear. Illustrated with full and partial page engravings and drawings. A tight, firm, bright example, only light edge rubbing--very unusual thus; light crescent dampstaing top inner corner of all leaves; pages bright but with scattered foxing. There is a small contemporary Chestnut Hill (Philadelphia) veterinary surgeon's ownership stamp upper corner of the first blank and title page and a later (1895) ownership signature from a family member also on the first blank. An engaging chronicle that concerns three generations of cats and their provider, Ann, a single woman with a ground-floor apartment and a back yard.

In July, 1987, a man was sitting on his porch when a neighbor stormed onto his property chasing one of his tenants with a broom. The porch man's dog, Bandit, bit the neighbor. Six weeks later, the state of Connecticut ordered bandit destroyed, alleging he was a dangerous pit bull. Rather than submit to order, the owner took the case to court. Author Vikki Hearne, a nationally known dog trainer, was called by the owner as an expert witness to refute the state's claim. What ensued speaks to how human concepts like "justice" and "rights" apply to animals.

Very scarce early study on birdlife in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. 20 engravings, tissue guards. Apparently contemporary binding maroon halfleater over dark green paper-covered boards. The binding is quite worn about all edges and with spine strip missing; internally there is foxing to the inner blanks as a bit to the half title but otherwise internally clean.

Profusely illustrated with full and partial page and vignette wood engravings. Intended, as per the prefactory note, as a holiday gift-book, a collection of short pieces for the education and edification of young people. The first two pieces are Christmas related---"Christmas and Christmas Carols" and "The Legend of the Chrstmas Tree"; there are others about various birds (owls, the eagle, pheasant), foreign lands, King Arthur;s Round Table, etc. The front free endpaper bears an interesting contemporary ink inscription: "Book of Honor: To some deserving member of the Fairmount Sabbath School, this book is given by the Superintendent on each sabbath, to be retained one week. Slim, square 8vo. in blindstamped violet cloth further stamped in gilt on front coloth and spine strip, with cover design of four of the title creatures; all edges gilt. 38 pps. with 14 illustrations. Later edition (first was 1851) of this children's work that depicted stuffed animals from the Natural History section of the Royal Museum at Stuttgart. Plouquet created a display of these creatures in comic poses (on a sofa, at a writing table, etc.) for the Great Exhibition in London. The illustrations in this book were made from daguerreotypes taken of the display. Story text for children.
