No dust jacket. Very little wear. Pictorial front cover. The pages are clean, tight and unmarked, with hundreds of color photographs of the immense number of species of cichlids. A good book for the aquarium enthusiast or the ichthyologist. Somewhat uncommon.

The cover is damaged in two places over the spine. The lower damage appears due to some water intrusion, and interior pages show a little bit of water staining, especially on the outer pages, diminishing towards the center. (See photographs.) The upper damage looks to be from more mundane reasons, just caught on something and tore. There is an impact mark on the lower edge of the front cover as well. This annual review was published between the 1930s and the 1960s. I have found no volumes after this 1963 edition, so this may be the last of the series. The pages are clean tight and unmarked, other than the aforementioned water stain. A rare and valued edition, diminished by the damage but still quite readable with lots of historical information. Ok, this book is massive. Every bird that has ever been seen in north of Mexico is here. Lots of color photographs, over 1100 pages, and about eight pounds. The ornithologists Bible, I guess. It has over 6,000 entries, 625 major articles, 1675 illustrations, and a bibliography of over 4,000 items. Book appears to have been gently used and shows little wear. I went to research the market for this book and found that there are many offered for sale out there, with many different appearances. Quite a few are being claimed as First Editions, which they clearly aren't, since they don't even look alike. Different cover designs, different dust jacket art. They can't all be firsts, and, in fact, none of them are. Grossett & Dunlap didn't do firsts often, if ever. They also didn't provide print counts, later publication dates, or anything else to tell you when a given copy was published. (This means that heirloom Wizard of Oz you have at home is not likely a first edition, either.) The original First Edition was printed in Berlin, in German, in 1923. The First American Edition was published in 1928 by Simon & Schuster. Therefore, this is not a first edition. First edition, first printing. A rare and collectible book, written by Charis Wilson (1914 - 2009), author, model and muse, and Edward Weston (1886-1958), photographer. (They were married between 1939 and 1946, while collaborating on this book, among other things.) The book shows little wear, just a small amount of shelf-wear along the lower edge and a 4 cm tear on page 87, professionally repaired by library conservator many years ago. No dust jacket, but the book is encased in a custom-made museum quality, acid-free, archival box, as shown in photos 1 and 2. The book is signed with an inscription by Wilson, dated 1991. Your purchase will also come with a photograph of the author, also from 1991 (photo #6). The consigner of this book was a close friend of Wilson's. She also has a copy of the book Ruggles of Red Gap, written by Wilson's father, Harry Leon Wilson, which could be purchased in a separate transaction.
