In a green cloth portfolio and in green cloth slipcase with gilt lettering to spine. Hinges partially split but binding firm. Stain to upper corner at gutter affecting numerous leaves. Small ex libris label to front pastedown of Leo S. Olschki, antiquarian bookseller, of Florence. Engraved title page. With 42 full-page finely engraved anatomical plates. The copperplate engravings are some of the finest engraved anatomical figures ever produced. Text in Italian. . Very Good. Full Vellum. 1560.

Some ink inscriptions to prelims and occasional small notes within from the 19th century. Slight yellowing to page edges and occasional minor spotting, owner's stickers to front pastedowns. Vol. I is the 'New Edition' (with Supplement); vols. II & III are First Editions (a fourth volume appeared in 1793). A collection of witty and amusing pieces following on from 'The New Foundling Hospital for Wit', containing poems, epigrams, quotes and letters from various sources, many of the authors are credited. Half vellum over salmon boards, with pink title label and gilt lettering to spine; pages uncut, and still with 16 pages of publisher's adverts which are often discarded. Some marks to the boards and binding. Very light scattered spots but generally internally clean. Bound by John Gray & Son Ltd., Cambridge. John Philips (1676 - 1709) was a Herefordshire man, a scholar and a poet, who died prematurely as the result of delicate health (ironically from consumption). This is, according to Johnson in 'Lives of the Poets', "his greatest work, the poem upon Cider, in two books; which was received with loud praises, and continued long to be read, as an imitation of Virgil's Georgick, which needed not shun the presence of the original.", and was first published in 1708. The book contains verse, which may be of a humourous nature, as well as what would appear to be articles or essays.. Illustrated with some folding b/w plates.
