Steen. No. 59 / N. 43.' Hardbound. Good. Martin Becan (Verbreck / van der Breck) [1563-1624] was born at Hilvarenbeck, Brabant, Holland. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1583, and taught theology for twenty-two years at Wuerzburg, Mainz, and Vienna, where he was confessor to Emperor Ferdinand II from 1620 until his death. He possessed a style clear and dignified, and noticeably free from the bitterness which marked the polemical literature of the day. After several print editions of the Luther Bible in Wurttemberg appeared, the publishing house of Johann Georg Cotta, in satisfied a need for comprehensively annotated bible that served Orthodoxy and PIETISM with this bible in 1729. It is a massive Annotated German Bible, based on the Martin Luther (1483-1546) version; with New Testament edited by Johann Christian Klemm (1688-1754); and the whole further annotated by Christoph Matthaus Pfaff (1686-1760). Charles Friedrich Goeb was a Mennonite minister, as well as a master printer in Western Pennsylvania. He came to Somerset, PA in 1809. The front board is detached. but on the positive side, I am reasonably certain the the binding is American. Though not in optimal condition, this edition is apparently VERY scarce. Also an inserted slip of paper that may indicate that this was owned by Samuel Reinke, and early Moravian pastor in York, PA. Hardbound. Good. The Luther translation, edited by Baron Carl Hildebrand von Canstein (1667-1719). Canstein, was a German aristocrat who became friends with the Pietists Philipp Spener and August Hermann Francke in 1691. They convinced him to establish a Bible Institute for the purpose of using stereotype printing to reduce the price of German bibles, and to promote bible study in Germany. Johann Simonis (1698-1768), conrector of the gymnasium and professor of Church history and antiquities in the University of Halle. Simonis's object in editing this edition of the Hebrew Bible was to publish a correct, but at the same time a cheap, edition of Van der Hooght's text. This version of the Torah was mainly based on that of Everardus van der Hooght (1642?-1716); and August Hahn (1792-1863). Ms. Presentation: To the Rev. L. G. Heck from his friend R. L. Dashill, Dickinson College, April 1, 1870. Dashill was named President of Dickinson College in 1868, becoming the first alumnus to hold that position. His term in office is best remembered for the student rebellion of 1870. Dashiell would resign as President on June 25, 1872, and then be named Corresponding Secretary of the Methodist Episcopal Missionary Society. Rev. Levi G Heck (1842-1918) was a Civil War veteran and a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church. Rev. Heck presented this Torah to the Dickinson College Library in 1906.
