Very accurate descriptions and illustrations of 108 species of algae with directions for collecting and preserving of algae.-- (Partly some slight foxing and or some slight dust soiling). Hariot was France foremost algologist of his time (a pupil of Bornet, who is considered the founder of scientific phycology in France) and his work has become quite scarce now. The illustration technique used for this work, coloured/tinted photogravures (héliogravure au grain de résine) reminds of 'nature printing' and was not widely used in botanical illustration. Contemporary full marbled calf, spine with 6 raised bands (top & bottom of spine slightly worn; corners slightly bumbed and partly slightly worn); gilt lettered (slightly faded) on red morocco label. With a fine allegorical engraved frontispiece by H. Roberts after a drawing by Samuel Wale, title printed in red and black & with a fine title-engraving by C. Grigion after S. Wale, and 75 plain engraved plates by various artists, depicting about 1500 plant portraits. ¶ First edition. A good copy of this renown and popular British Herbal. The copper plates are in sharp impressions, and not ruined by being crudely coloured as in the coloured copies. In 1917 the systematical part was published. A good ex-library copy. With the bookplate of the Boyce Thompson Institute for plant Research Inc. (Jonker, N.Y.).

With 57 woodcut figures in the text. ¶ First edition. Kloete Nortier, a pupil of Miquel and Apr. J.E. de Vrij, was a very prommising pharmacist at Rotterdam. Unfortunately, his early death prevented a great scientific career. Through the publication of his commentaries on the Ph. Neerlandica he got involved in a polemic with G.J. Mulder. With 3 illustrations and 17 portaits of mushrooms, all in wood-engravings. An early work on the culture of mushrooms and the description of common species (both edible and toxic) found in nature. The last chapter is devoted to intoxication and its treatment.-(Scattered foxing).

Stuttgart,: Gustav Fischer,, 1976.. 822, [iv, blank] pp. Royal 8vo (17 x 24,5 cm.). Original publisher's cloth. With 18 maps and 543 photographic illustrations of which many in full colour. A good copy of the 3rd. revised edition of this, now obsolete, classic standard work. Lavisly illustrated and still useful for the amateur cactus grower.

(Elberfeld (now Wuppertal),: Sam. Lueas,, 1838.. [ii], 31, [i, blank]; [28, blank] pp. 8vo (13,5 x 22 cm.). Contemporary marbled boards, edges red. ¶ Very rare, only 5 copies in the WorldCat. Fuhlrott "Obtained a doctorate from Bonn (1830); became a science teacher at Elberfeld, subsequently vice-director of the Realschule. Won modest recognition as a naturalist. In 1856, he received fossilized bones found by quarry workers in Felfhofer cave of the Neander Valley; Fohlrott identified them as "Homo neanderthalensis", but reaction to his discovery was hostile, and extensive controversy ensued. It was not until after his death and the discovery of fossil men at Spy (Belgium), and Gibraltar that opposition to the notion of Neanderthal man was finally silenced"(DSB).

With some, (a few folded,) illustrations ¶ An important work on the illustreous Dutch Bulb Speculations. The work begins with a historical introduction, and continues with 45 of the most important pamphlets on Bulb speculation (the pamphlets are represented in facsimile or reset). The work is concluded by a catalogue of pamphlets (1636-1637) compiled by J.C. Westerman. The whole is finely printed on handmade paper.--(N.E.H.A., 11).

With 150 plant portraits. ¶ A nice facsimile of the herbal printed round 1500 by Willem Vosteman at Antwerp. The main body of the work described and illustrates 150 plants with hint about their medicinal properties and use. In it we find the very first images of plants in a printed book.

Many references are made to Abyssinia and earlier authors on 'Hagenia abyssinica' (flores Koso).

An indispensable tool for the historian of art, especially for those with an interest in botanical illustrations.

At the time of its publication in 1854, Krook's Handboek was the most comprehensive work on Cacti available in Dutch.

With a large number of plant portraits. ¶ A very nice facsimile edition of Clusius' French translation of Dodonaeus' famous Cruydt-boeck of 1557, together withh the learned introduction and commentaries by Opsomer. This facsimile was made from C. Van Hulthem's copy which he had acquired in 1805. Copy with Opsomer's authograph dedication to Dr. P. Julien.-- A very good copy.
