Original burgundy leather boards with elaborate scrolled design front, back and spine with gilt design and titles front and spine; all edges gilt, grey endpapers. An occasional tiny foxing mark and otherwise contents in fine condition without marks, tears or folds. Binding is tight and square. Very light rubbing to corner and spine edges with gilt remaining fine and bright. A beautiful copy.
James Greenwood (1832–1929) was a notable Victorian journalist, social commentator and novelist. Greenwood is regarded as one of the pioneers of investigative journalism and wrote several articles sympathetic to the plight of the working-class. Undated but assumed First Edition listed by both WorldCat and Copac as 1921. 4to up to 12" tall; 32 pages, with illustrated frontispiece and 3 additional full-page colored plates and other line drawings by Honor C Appleton. Professionally re-backed with library binding, reinforced corners and decorative endpapers. Boards have wear; light damp-staining to top edge of a few pages (not affecting text block or plates); final text page is browned. Binding is tight and contents are generally clean and bright. Very scarce.
Honor Charlotte Appleton (1879–1951) was a British illustrator of over 150 children's books and literary classics.

First Edition. 4to up to 12" tall; 40pp. illustrated throughout with original art work, sepia photos, old letters, documents and medals etc. Illustrated boards with brown endpapers. Both volume and unclipped jacket are in fine, unread, unmarked condition. Teddy belonged to ten-year-old Aileen Rogers, whose father Lawrence left Aileen, her little brother Howard, and his wife Janet home on the family farm in Quebec when he went to war. Janet and Lawrence exchanged more than 200 letters during his service. Aileen and Howard also wrote their dad and Aileen sent her beloved Teddy overseas to help protect him. Sadly, Lawrence died at the battle of Passchendaele. In 2002, his granddaughter Roberta Innes found Teddy and the letters in an old family briefcase. From 1890 to 1914, the establishment of special children's hospitals and wards led to a number of hospitals commissioning Doulton, Lambeth (now known as Royal Doulton) to create hand-painted tile mosaics of children's nursery rhymes and fairy tales. "The tiles were recognized as being hygienic and the picture on them could be used to both amuse and cheer up the young patients". In mint condition. Fishing with Gubby is the marvellously illustrated, authentic account of one season in the life of a salmon fisherman. Gubby's journey first takes him up BC's west coast, through Georgia, Johnstone and Queen Charlotte straits and north past Port Hardy. He then heads into the open ocean towards treacherous Cape Scott, through to Winter Harbour and Quatsino Sound to settle in for a summer of fishing.
