New York, New York: John Tallis & Co, c. 1869. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. In difficult condition and sold as is. Single vol. 1 (Comedies) only of 3 vol. set. Quarto, 10 3/4" tall, xxxi + 576 + 22 steel plate illustrations, gilt titles on three-quarter decorative leather over brown cloth, gilt fore-edges. A good hardcover overall (interior very good minus) BUT with back strip missing and covers loose, fore-corner tips worn through to boards; internal binding solid, paper lightly yellowed, steel plate engravings bright, but with light foxing primarily on verso of plates and at some margins, and with previous owner's signature and short inscription with year 1869 penned on flyleaf. This larger and heavier volume will require some additional postage.

Milan, Italy: Fratelli Treves; Milano, 1902. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Internally a very good, but an ex-library copy with markings to the spine and endpapers. Quarto, 9 1/2" tall, letterpress printed in two-color, 290 pages gilt titles on decorative vellum with brown silk ties. A good, flexible cover, relatively clean, with moderate shelf wear overall BUT the spine of binding has been covered in green library tape with spine label affixed and rubbing to the spine; hinges and binding solid but spine is canted, cream white hand-made paper paper is lightly yellowed and remains supple. This would be an excellent copy for binding restoration due to the quality of the interior.

Paris, France: Chez Jacques LeCoffre, 1849. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Text in French. Sextodecimo, 5 3/4" tall, 144 pages; five-banded spine, brown Morrocan quarter leather with marbled boards and marbled endpapers, green ribbon. A very good, clean, hardcover first edition with rubbing to the leather at the top and bottom of the backstrip, marbled cover paper worn through to the board at the corners, hinges and binding solid, paper supple and cream white with light to moderate foxing scattered throughout.

Paris, France: Raymond et Menard, 1810. Early printing. Hardcover. Good. French text. 4 vols. 24mo, 5 1/2" tall, 1: 269 pages + frontispiece and 3 plates; 2: 277 pages + 3 plates; 3: 287 pages + 3 plates; 315 pages + 3 plates; marbled endpapers, leather-bound, gilt fore-edges and decorations; A good, clean hardcover set overall, but all covers are edge worn and loose (all present) and back strips missing; internal bindings solid, paper clean and lightly yellowed with minor scattered foxing. Well worth the cost of binding restoration if not total rebinding.

[part 7 of a larger set--complete unto itself] single vol. 24mo, 5 1/2" tall, 283 pages; marbled endpapers, leather-bound, gilt fore-edges, and decorations; good minus, generally clean, hardcover overall, but all covers are edge worn and back strip missing; hinges cracked, internally very good, binding solid, laid paper clean and lightly yellowed with minor scattered foxing.

[part 6 of a larger set--complete unto itself] single vol. 24mo, 5 1/2" tall, 276 pages + 4 plates, leather bound ; very good, clean, small hard cover over all, but all covers are edge worn and back strips badly chipped; internal binding solid, laid paper supple and clean and lightly yellowed with minor scattered foxing. Well worth the cost of binding restoration if not total rebinding.

Paris, France: Delloye, Tresse, 1840. First Edition, early printing. Hardcover. Good. Text in French. Octavo, 8" tall, 247 pages, quarter-leather with paper over boards. Possible first printing, with both Balzac's dedication and the credit "Represente sur le Theatre de la Porte-Saint-Martin, le 14 Mars, 1840," dated the same month and year. A list of characters and the actors who portrayed them is printed on the back of the half-title page. A good copy overall BUT the cover is quite worn with the black leather back strip torn off (five inches of the backstrip laid in) and boards worn through at all extremities, front hinge cracked, first signature loosened, binding solid, text paper lightly yellowed but with foxing scattered throughout. This would be a good copy for binding restoration despite the foxing and is priced accordingly. (note: overseas postage may be prohibitively expensive)
