Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1993. Small quarto, pp xviii, 166, illustrated with a few photographs maps and charts, extremely clean internally, blue cloth in very good condition, with the original cellophane dustwrapper. [The origins of the present-day faunas and floras of Africa and South America have been a fascinating puzzle for hundreds of years, and have provided a remarkable example of the catalytic effect of one scientific discipline upon another. It is now the turn of the biologists to explain how the present faunas and floras have arisen, and this volume brings together the latest information and theories about the interrelations between plate tectonics, palaeontology, and the present distribution of plants and animals.]. Descripción:
Lugduni Batavorum: Westenium, 1769. Latin text throughout. Title page, dedication leaf, pp 506, (ii), with seven engraved folding plates and one folding table, (slight damage to the margin of the ornithological plate), a little age-toning generally, endpapers unevenly browned, but otherwise very clean internally, bound in full contemporary polished calf, slight wear at the corners, joints cracking slightly, lacking a small piece at the head of the spine. [The students whose names appear on the dissertations were not necessarily their authors; it was their function to present the dissertation and defend it in public debate, but the responsibility for the content of the dissertation was largely that of the professor, in this case Linnaeus. The fact that Linnaeus cited the Amoenitates as the place of publication for plant names he credited to himself indicates that he was generally the principal author of the work. At the end of this volume is a list of "Editiones operum auctoris", including…

Cambridge University Press, 1993. A few illustrations and charts, small quarto, pp x, 341, very clean internally, green cloth in excellent condition, in a very good dustwrapper. [Eastern African rain forests are remarkable in their high level of endemism. Miocene uplift of the central African plateau separated these montane and coastal forests from the main Guineo-Congolian forest of west and central Africa. Since then, stable Indian Ocean temperatures maintained a region of high rainfall throughout Pleistocene droughts that devastated forest elsewhere on the continent. Relics of the former Pan-African rain forest survived here, the study of which provides a unique insight into tropical evolutionary processes. This book brings together research on the animals, plants and geography of this intriguing residual forest, and highlights the need for effective management practices to conserve its exceptional biodiversity in the face of increasing pressure for land for cultivation.]. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1987. Illustrated with maps, charts and a few line drawings, large octavo, pp x, 214, clean internally, blue cloth in good condition. [With extensive sections and contributions on neotropical plants, butterflies and birds.]. {The once accepted theory that the Amazonian forests have remained stable for millions of years can no longer be held in the light of contemporary information. This is a critical appraisal of the available evidence on the history of Amazonia during the last 1.8 million years, reviewing the geology, geomorphology, palaeoclimatology, pedology, botany and zoology. There is special emphasis on neotropical birds, butterflies and plants. Much new material is introduced, along with background information and alternative hypotheses from other sources. The significance of the biogeographical studies for human activities is also discussed.}. First British edition. Cloth. Good.

Two volumes, large octavo, pp xvi, 1439, a slight mark to one fore-edge, otherwise very clean internally, brown cloth in excellent condition, the dustwrappers are slightly rubbed and age-toned. SCARCE. [A heavy set - extra postage may be needed.]. {Southern Africa is certainly not a naturally bounded area so that there are several possibilities for delineating it and concepts about its extent. Wellington discussed the various possibilities for delineation and suggested that one line stands out more clearly and definitely as a physical boundary than any other, namely the South Equatorial Divide, the watershed between the ZaIre, Cuanza and Rufiji Rivers on the one hand and the Zambezi, Cunene and Rovuma Rivers on the other. This South Equatorial Divide is indeed a major line of separation for some organisms and is also applicable in a certain geographical sense, though it does not possess the slightest significance for many other groups of organisms, ecosystems or geographical…
