The Aloe is Katherine Mansfield's only novel, which she did not publish. She wrote it to crystallize the memories of her childhood and then reworked it to create her short story, "Prelude". After Mansfield's death, her husband, John Middleton Murry, edited and published The Aloe and restored its original length, detail, and texture.
