Gilt ruled edges; intricate inner dentelles; all edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Frontispiece (with tissue guard) and 15 aquatint hors-texte plates throughout. Includes an advertisement page after title page stating this book would have been released earlier, but "impediments" and the plates delayed its release. There is also included a section for Notes and Errata. Without previous owners' names or other markings. 259 pp., [1]. 5 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches.

Original full gilt-ruled calf with late eighteenth century rebacking. Previously repaired hinges now weak. Queer (but continuous) collation due to various printers: [xii], 239 [blank], 255-286; 189-210, [1]. All edges heavily gilt. Occasional but numerous interesting scholia in a light pen giving very detailed corrections to text which were (significantly) incorporated into later editions. General browning of the text; fore-edge corners bumped; general wear to boards. Remnants of cancel at page 122. Page 213 is supposed to be page 123. Page 181 lacks corner not affecting text. Nonetheless a handsome copy. ; Harrington's economic basis for government had a profound effect on the framers of the constitution. A copy of the Commonwealth is known to have been bought by Thomas Jefferson prior to his departure for France.
