This edition constitutes the first edition of the first part, the two parts being published together for the first time in 1771.

Veratria is a poisonous vegetable alkaloid or mixture of alkaloids, obtained especially from various species of veratrum, particularly the white hellebore. It was used as an ointment for the relief of neuralgia, rheumatism, as discussed in this work. Turnbull also investigates its effects on "Affection of the Heart", paralysis, dropsy and gout. Provenance: Bristol Infirmary stamp on blank margin of title and half-title.

Heyden's work first appeared in French at Ghent in 1645 and then in Latin, the author being a physician in Ghent.
