This is a near-perfect copy of Amiens - Dawn of Victory, written in 2001 by the military historians James McWilliams and R. James Steel.

This is a trade paperback--it was apparently not published in hard cover.

Amiens (August 8-11 1918) was the first 'modern battle' attempted by the Allies. Employing secrecy, deception and the troops of five nations, the Allies won a string of victories which culminated in the Armistice 100 days later. Amiens was the decisive battle of World War I; it was called "the black day of the German army" and marked the beginning of the end of the war.

This book is the first to study the battle in real detail. Using eyewitness accounts from survivors, plus accounts from participants.

As you can see, the spine was cracked. But the book was not read. It is in pristine condition.

This is the second edition of The Anglo-Zulu War, part of the Bramley Books series The War Correspondents. It was written by the South African historians John Laband and Ian Knight and published in 1996. This copy was published by Bramley in 1997.The Anglo-Zulu War was fought in 1879, between the British and the Zulu Kingdom. There were several famous and bloody battles but the British eventually won.This book has not been read and is in mint condition. is a novel by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008) about the defeat of the Imperial Russian Army at the Battle of Tannenberg in East Prussia. The novel is an unusual blend of fiction narrative and historiography, and has given rise to extensive and often bitter controversy, both from the literary as well as from the historical point of view.
The book was translated and published in 1972, by Bodley Head. Its sales were such that two more printings were quickly completed, all in 1972. This is a copy from the 3rd printing.
In 1974, Solzhenitsyn was expelled from the Soviet Union and, two years after that, he moved to the USA, where he began to revise this story. In 1984, a new version, much expanded, was published, making the first book a limited edition.

This is a second impression, first US printing, of The Best of Sail, by the British soldier, historian, sailor and author Basil Lubbock (1876-1944). It is a collection of 36 paintings of famous clipper ships, and accompanying historical notes, excerpted from the famous three-volume set, Sail: The Romance of the Clipper Ships, first published in 1927.
The three-volume collected set was created from the original front cover illustrations created for the British magazine, Blue Peter, by the legendary maritime painter, Jack Spurling (1870-1933). The text includes the history of each ship, along with lore and legend, and is a treasure for those who value stories of the sea. This single volume is a selection of the 36 most significant ships featured in the original three-volume set. Each featured ship is portrayed in a full-color full-page illustration along with the original text provided by Lubbock. I attach photos of the contents.

This is a second printing of Buller's Campaign, the story of the much-decorated, and much-maligned General Sir Redvers Buller (1839-1908), also called 'Reverse Buller' because of his often questionable leadership skills and numerous mistakes and defeats. It was written by the British writer Julian Symons (1912-1994) and first published in 1963. This is the White Lion edition, published in 1974.From a Review:

This is a first edition of Byron of the Wager, written by the British historian Peter Shankland in 1975.

The wreck of the Wager stands next to the mutiny on the Bounty
as one of the most powerful and gripping stories in maritime history. The HMS Wager was a square-rigged Royal Navy ship of 28 guns, which was detailed to accompany George Anson in his famous 1740 voyage in search of Spanish treasure ships. Wrecked in the terrible weather in the middle of a Patagonian winter, many of the ship's crew survived (including the future grandfather of Lord Byron) but there were terrible personal tensions. Incredibly, the two sides managed to work together to get themselves home. Five years later, nine out of 300 reached England after adventures and privations that tested the limits of human endurance.

This copy is in mint condition. There is a small tear to the dust jacket and a little fading to the dust jacket (which is unclipped).
The book itself is pristine.

This is a mint-condition first edition of Black Watch: Liberating Europe and Catching Himmler - My Extraordinary WW2 with the Highland Division, written by the Scottish physicist, and Black Watch veteran, Tom Renouf (1925-2016).

It was Renouf's division which captured Heinrich Himmler in 1945, and this is his wartime memoir.

This is a near-perfect copy of six collected novels by the great British military novelist C.S. Forester (1899-1966). This book is now approaching rare status. It includes The Ship, Mr. Midshipman Hornblower, The Earthly Paradise, The General, The Captain From Connecticut, and the African Queen. These books cover both world wars, the War of 1812, the Napoleonic Wars, Christopher Columbus' voyage of 1497, and the African Queen, made famous by the film starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn. They also introduce the reader to the famed Horatio Hornblower. This is a large book--861 pages. Minor wear to the edges of the dust jacket. The edges of the pages are darkening a little. One dogear. Otherwise pristine.

This is an unread first edition of Canada's Glory, Battles That Forged a Nation 1759-1953, reviewed as "an excellent account of Canada's involvement in decisive international battles from 1759 to 1953." It was written by the Canadian author Arthur Bishop (1923-2013), a WWII Spitfire pilot and son of the famed Canadian ace Billy Bishop. See Table of Contents photo for the list of battles. 309 pages, including photos and maps. This book is unopened and unread. Save for a inscription (daughter to father) on the front endpaper, it is in mint condition.

Thomas Fraser (1850-1934) was an English seaman who began as a 15 year-old apprentice and retired as a captain. Along the way, he worked on 25 voyages in fast clippers, delivering a wide variety of cargo around the globe. When he retired, he wrote everything down, and proved to be talented at narration and description. His tales of far-off places, mixed with his Victorian outlook, are humorous, charming and very interesting.
The English writer Marjory Gee pulled his writings together and the collection was published by Stanford Maritime in 1979. For the US market, Stanford Maritime printed additional copies and they were marketed by Norton, as a US edition, although it's the same book.
This is a first printing of the stated First American edition.
It is plain burgundy boards with silver lettering on the spine. There is no other adornment.
The dust jacket is unclipped and has no shelf-wear.
The only thing that keeps it from being in mint condition is one dog-ear, on page 39.

This is the "unforgettable", "riveting" first-rate biography of Dr. John Reid, a Canadian doctor who was serving in Hong Kong in 1941. After the Japanese victory, he spent a year in a Hong Kong prison camp before being sent to Japan as a slave labourer. His efforts to save his men were heroic, but he would never be the same. He was a complex man--an outstanding doctor and war hero but, after returning home, a damaged and deeply troubled man. It was written by his son, the journalist Jonathan Reid.It was published in 2020--I don't believe it was issued in hardcover, so this is a first edition. Trade paperback. 455 pages including photographs. Two faint dogears, the last at page 71. Tiny bits of shelfwear.Otherwise pristine.

This is a first edition, with unclipped dust jacket of Castles of Scotland, by Susan Ross. It is a very well-written book, with lots of photos, giving detailed tours of Scotland's finest castles (30+).

This is a first edition of Churchill's Generals, edited by the English military historian John Keegan (1934-2012), and British soldier and fellow adventurer Michael Alexander (1920-2004). This is one of the original copies, from the UK print run.
It is a unique collection of essays by eminent historians. Churchill's reputation as Prime Minister during World War II fluctuated according to the successes and failures of his generals. Most were household names—even heroes. Yet all were prey to the intolerance, interference, irascibility, and inspiration of Britain's leader, who wanted to be both the general in the field and the presiding strategic genius. It is an illustrated guide to the clans, tartans and families of Scotland, with high-quality images and the histories of the clans. It begins with a brief overview of the clan system and the tradition of wearing tartan; the clans are then organized alphabetically, with special features on the major clans, such as the Stuarts, Camerons, Campbells, and Gordons.
In addition, there are dramatic color photos throughout of the Scottish landscape as well as its castles and landmarks. It also has maps of clan origins and a listing of clan associations around the world.
The dust jacket has a 1" tear in the front. The book is in mint condition.

This is a near-fine copy of Cochrane: The Real Master and Commander. It is an excellent biography of Thomas Cochrane (1997-1860), Admiral of the Red, Lord Dundonald and a swashbuckling hero upon whose life and personality Jack Aubrey and Horatio Hornblower are based. Nicknamed 'the sea wolf' by Napoleon, Cochrane was one of the most daring and successful naval heroes of all time. It was published in 2007; this is the soft cover edition, published in 2008. 9 1/4" x 6", 420 pages with loads of maps, drawings and photos.This book may have been leafed through, but it does not appear to have been read. The paper is darkening a little at the edges, but it is in perfect condition.

This is a first edition of Command of the Sea: The History and Strategy of Maritime Empires, a fascinating book by the American naval warfare historian Clark G Reynolds (1939-2005).
