New York1983: Farrar, Strauss & Giroux Moravia (1907-1990) belongs to the extraordinary group of Italian writers who achieved world prominence after World War II, many of whose novels also became great films. This is a Fine copy of the First American Edition (stated First Printing). Translation from the Italian by William Weaver. Turquoise paper-covered boards with a dark blue cloth spine; gilt lettering. Text is clean and fresh; 297 pages. The dustjacket is Very Good Plus to Near Fine. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1948. A wartime romance set in the French Alps. This is a Very Good (Plus) to Near Fine copy of the First Edition. Orange cloth binding titled in black on the spine, with author's reproduced signature on the front cover. Clean text; 152 pages; black topstain. Lightly rubbed at the margins, with two small "dings" to the front. The paste-downs have a glueing discoloration that seems to be common with this edition; publishing defect. Yellow paper-covered boards with a black cloth spine; paper label for titling. Clean text; 426 pages. Bumped, with rubbing around the margins; flood mark on the rear cover. lacking the dustjacket. Cummings (1894-1962) served with his friend John Dos Passos in the ambulance corps during WW I, where, like so many others, they became strongly anti-war. Although radical in his orthography and cultural attitudes, oddly enough cummings was a political supporter of Joseph McCarthyThis is a Very Good copy of a Later Printing of the First Edition. Blue paper-covered boards with light green cloth spine. Clean text with 73 pages. Two very tiny smudges, else Near Fine. New York: Summit Books, 1984. Burgess, a literary polymath, is best known for his dystopian satire "A Clockwork Orange." This is a Fine copy of the First American Edition. Light green paper-covered boards with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; 160 pages, indexed. The dustjacket is also Fine; in an archival plastic protector. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. New York & London: The Macaulay Company, 1904. Issued in three parts over several years, Hardy considered this drama his masterpiece. Unfortunately, the world did not agree; the first printings were quite small, and remains uncommon. These are Very Good (Plus) copies of the First Editions. Green cloth bindings with gilt titling on the spine and front covers; top edges gilt, others rough-cut. Volume One is the Second Issue of about 1000 copies (the First Issue, from 1903, was miniscule). Clean text save a few penciled notations; xxii, 228 pages, v (a preview), with three pages of publisher's adverts. Light rub to the margins and with a small tear/chip affecting a few pages around page 10. Volume Two (1906), which was about 1500 copies, also has some pencil notations but is generally clean. xiii, 302 pages, with two pages of reviews of previous volume. New York & London: Harper & Bros, 1927. Nichols (1891-1966) supposedly wrote her incredibly successful play (it ran for 5 years on Broadway) in about 3 hours. A comedy of interfaith marriage, trite but celebrating tolerance, was "universally loathed by the critics. Robert Benchly.nursed a particular hatred for it." The book preceded the film of 1928. This is a Very Good (Plus) to Near Fine copy of the First Edition, quite a scarce title despite its popularity. Blue cloth binding with titling on the spine and front cover in black. Clean text; 324 pages, with a four-page publisher's catalog in the rear. Tiny bit of rub to the tips; spine slightly darkened. Neat previous-owner signature in pencil on the FFEP. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1931. Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole {1884-1941) was highly thought of by Henry James and Joseph Conrad; his work is worth a revisit. This is a Very Good (Plus) to Near Fine copy of an edition that was LIMITED to 200 copies [stated "This is one of two hundred large paper copies printed in February 1931"] and SIGNED by Walpole on the Limitation page. [This title issued in America as "Above the Dark Tumult"] Large octavo with blue cloth binding; tan cloth spine with a paper titling label. Clean text; 972 pages, with an extra label in the rear. Rubbed at the corners; else, a close to Fine copy. In an archival plastic protector.. Signed by Author. Limited. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Toronto: Bell & Cockburn, 1913. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the First Canadian Edition, published at the same time as the American version ("May, 1913"); identical, with the exception of the publisher name on the Title Page and spine. Less common than the American. Olive green cloth binding, decorated in black and with yellow titling on the front cover. Clean text; 169 pages, with the last page having a publisher advert on the reverse. Frontis illustration by Gordon Grant. Bumped, spine darkened and the lettering somewhat rubbed. Previous-owned signature on the TP; faint evidence of erasures on the FFEP; several spots on the front cover. . First American Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1909. A collection of sixteen stories. This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition; the first printing (stated "Published October, 1909"). Green ribbed cloth binding, ruled and with a Viking ship in black on the front cover; titled in gilt. Clean text; 324 pages. Frontis illustration and seven others within (illustration facing page 232 is present but loose). Mildly bumped; rubbing at the head and foot of the spine (some fray at the foot). A decent copy. New York: Macmillan, 1911. Originally serialized; this is a Very Good copy of the First Edition in the variant red cloth binding (London's books usually had decorative bindings). Ruling and titles are filled in white that has rubbed rather badly, an unfortunate characteristic of this particular binding. The spine has darkened, and almost all the fill is gone, but title is still readable. Mildly bumped, with some wear at head and foot of the spine. Clean text; 405 pages, with six pages of publisher's adverts in the rear. Textblock is very bright, supple, and clear to read. The front paste-down has two mounted newspaper clippings. One, from 1951, reports London's popularity in the Soviet Union. The second, from 1965, is an obituary for London's half-brother. A solid copy, but not for the advanced collector. London: George Newnes, Limited, 1903. Before Flashman, there was Gerard, Doyle's somewhat picaresque soldier of the Napoleonic Wars. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. Dark blue cloth binding, titled and decorated in gilt. Clean text; 374 pages. Frontis illustration and fifteen others within. There is no publication date, but it is 1903. Mild rub to margins, very slight splay. A nice, solid copy. Lacking a dustwrapper.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

London: Constable & Company Limited, 1932. One of the most delightful books in the Shavian canon, due to the nineteen wood engravings by John Farleigh (1900-1965) that grace it. This is a Very Good (Plus) to Near Fine copy of the First Edition (December 1932). Illustrated paper-covered boards in black and white; white lettering on the front cover and spine. Clean text; 75 pages.There is a rather attractive bookplate on the front paste-down. Rubbing at the margins, but still an extremely handsome book. Lacking the scarce glassine dustwrapper; in an archival plastic protector.. First Edition. Pictorial Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Garden City: Doubleday & Co., Inc., 1947. Stone's biographical novel of the Socialist leader Eugene Debs; a Very Good (Plus) copy of a Later Printing. Black cloth binding with spine labeling in red and gilt. Only hints of bumps; very bright, almost new condition. Clean text; 432 pages, with four pages of publisher's adverts for other Stone works in the rear. There is a publisher defect on the rear paste-down, where a bump in the board has caused a crease affecting the last 40-50 pages of the book (sounds worse than it is!). The dustjacket is also Very Good (Plus); it is unclipped but the price has been inked out. It shows a bit of edgewear with some tiny chips along the tips of the spine.
