Original printed red wrappers, untrimmed, tissue overlay; in a brown cloth slipcase. First edition, one of 400 ordinary copies, of an edition of 440. Inscribed in the year of publication by the American composer (and subject of Pound's book) George Antheil in ink on front flyleaf to [Tr. Hocquard?] "with friendship and thankfulness... Paris 1924." Gallup A25-a. (BA).

From the Bart Auerbach Collection. 2 pages, 12mo, integral blank leaf, in French. A charming social note: "I have had no news of you since the immediate reply I made to your letter... Did you not receive that reply? I told you as plainly as possible, but I asked you, at the same time, to tell me the probable date of the wedding..." (BA).

Brooklyn: Grant Brower, 1894. Folio (12 x 9 inches). 24 pp. Musical notation. Original printed wrappers. Somewhat age-darkened, a few chips at edges of wrappers. Revised edition, after the first of 1891. Exercises, scale studies, arpeggios or harp chords, harmonics, slides, double fingering, velocity studies, barre, a duet for two banjos, ending with Brower's composition "Kingston Galop." Scarce. Not in OCLC.

Milan, Rome, etc.: G. Ricordi & Co, 1893. 4to (267 x 203 mm; 10½ x 8 inches). 471 pages. Full-page portrait of Verdi. Original gilt-lettered and -ruled green cloth. A fine copy with only slightest of wear at the ends of the spine. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Published the same year as the first edition in Italian. Falstaff is the last of Verdi's operas, composed as he neared his eightieth year. The composer wanted to write a comedy, and collaborated with Boito for three years from mid-1889. Of his 27 operas, this is only his second comedy (the first was his second opera, Un giorno di regno). The work premiered at La Scala in Milan on 9 February 1893; it was published in its original Italian and in translations later that year. .

Original red cloth-backed boards, printed paper label on spine. FIRST EDITION, number 1399 of 2000 copies. With a fine provenance: From the collection of David W. Young, who bought the "Goding" Amati that is described herein. Young inscribes the front flyleaf: "This rare book purchased from R. Wurlitzer in year 1961, at time I obtained the 'Goding' Amati violin of 1662 from Lyon & Healy. - signed - David W. Young at 18508 Clyde Ave. Homewood, Ill U.S.A." Presentation copy, inscribed by Huneker on the dedication page: "This book of musical jollies is for the Weils - Ottilie and Otto - with the regards of their old friend James Huneker, May 1914, New York." Otto Weil was involved as a director and manager in the music scene in New York, for several years being with the business staff of the Metropolitan Opera Company. "Old Fogy" - the music critic Huneker himself - writes on Bach, Mozart, Wagner, Liszt, et al. Unusual in the dust jacket. Merle Johnson, p. 274. (BA).

Original blue cloth, gilt-lettered and decorated. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Miss Carolyn Quintin with the my [sic] compliments. M. Steinert. New Haven, Conn, Nov 14, 1903." An autobiographical memoir by one of New Haven's most famous figures in music. The Bavarian-born Steinert was a music merchant and an instrumentalist, who played piano, organ, flute, cello, and violin, and performed throughout Europe in his early years. After immigrating to the United States, he toured the South playing his violincello and singing as a minstrel. Abandoning this in 1865, he founded his eponymous M. Publisher's flexible faux leather. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by the composer on the front free endpaper: "To Irving Lesser(?) With best wishes and pleasant memories of "Alexander's Ragtime band" / Irving Berlin." A scarce promotional songbook issued by Twentieth Century-Fox in connection with their successful 1938 musical film "Alexander's Ragtime Band." The songbook contains piano transcriptions of three new songs written for the film-including "Now It Can Be Told," "My Walking Stick," and "Marching Along with Time" - as well as 25 other songs written by Berlin. The recipient was possibly Irving Lesser (d. 1964), a movie producer and film distributor.

A very good copy in slightly worn jacket that has several chips and closed tears at top, the rear panel somewhat toned. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED by Thomson in 1986 on a separate sheet pasted to the front free endpaper: "For Max Alder cordially Virgil Thomson, 1986." Beneath Thomson's sheet is the 1964 ownership inscription of Theodore and Lillian McClintock.
