Ickes, Harold. Columnists and Calumnists. No place of publication stated: No publisher stated, 1939. 8 1/2 x 11 (216 x 280 mm) sheets, [1], 16 pages, printed on rectos only and stapled at top left. Advance copy of an acerbic speech by U.S. Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes, in which he levels sustained, withering criticism of certain newspaper columnists (or "calumnists," as he calls them). He singles out Westbrook Pegler as well as General Hugh Johnson, both fierce opponents of President Roosevelt. (Johnson worked briefly in the Roosevelt administration but was fired because of his Fascist sympathies.) On the other hand, he praises the great Heywood Broun: "Here is a genial philosopher who declines to take himself too seriously and yet one who never pulls his punches, even if he chuckles as he lands on an eagerly outstretched chin."
His view of Dorothy Thompson is decidedly mixed. On the one hand, he calls her "a sincere and earnest lady who is trying to cover too much ground by setting… Leer más

12mo (7 3/8 x 5 inches; 187 x 125 mm), 1,143, [1] pages, in blue cloth, titles to spine, in an unclipped, printed dust jacket.Don't be put off by the odd title. There's plenty of interesting content here about post-war Britain and socialism, along with chapters about Germany, the Soviet Union, India, and more. G.D.H. Cole (1889-1959) was an Oxford professor and advocate of democratic socialism. Like other Gollancz titles, this volume carries Gollancz's distinctive yellow dust jacket. In fact, copies in the original dust jacket are scarce to the market.CONDITION: Very Good in a Good dust jacket. Some foxing and soiling to top and fore edges, rubbing to extremities, ownership signature to front free end paper. The dust jacket is age-toned and has a few chips, especially at the bottom of the spine and real panel. Jacket verso has some tape repairs.

Descripción:
Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1971. 1st Edition. Octavo. Very Good+ in a Very Good dust jacket. Slight soiling to front board with an erasure on the front free end paper. Dust jacket lightly soiled, especially around the edges. The great French journalist and intellectual Jean-Francois Revel (1924-2006) argues that the United States could lead a global revolution. This, needless to say, caused a great outcry among the Left, especially in France.
