Half leather with blue cloth. Tears in spine ends, a bit of bumping to corners, stains and fading to cloth. Some wrinkling and light soiling to endpapers.

London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1853. New edition, re-engraved, with corrections. Leather bound. Good. 24 colour plates + index. 24 cm. Quarter burgundy leather with green cloth. Spine and corners worn. Soiling to cloth on both boards. Ink inscriptions on front and rear endpapers and title page. Front endpapers have spots at top. Plates have a wave to them. Some soiling to p. 33 of index. Samuel Butler was an English classical scholar and schoolmaster. He is not to be confused with his better-known grandson of the same name, author of the novel Erewhon. This text is signed at rear by G. Perry McClintock of Seskanore House, Co. Tyrone. Online photos of the house suggest this book may once have formed part of the fine library in a gentleman's country seat.

Leather binding wrapped in brown paper. Leather deteriorating, cracks in spine. Both boards detached, as are first pages up to p. iv and a few pages in Appendix. Edges worn. Brown paper has tears and chips and is chipping off the rear board. Ink signature on front free endpaper. Small tear at bottom of folding frontispiece map. First and last pages are darkened, soiled, worn at edges. Most pages between darkening a bit but neat and clean. Needs TLC. Maps included: Chart of the World (folding frontispiece); North America; South America; Asia; Europe; France; Germany; Italy; Spain and Portugal.

Commentary on the earth, directions, measurements, the ocean, climate, minerals, vegetables, animals, political geography, industry, descriptions of the various continents. Kansas edition with special geography section on this state, two-page colour map, expanded description, drawing of state capitol building, about 6 p. in all. Other parts of the world are compared to Kansas ie. Iceland is about half its size, etc.
