Fine. 34pp. Bound in decorated yellow wrappers, sewn. 9" x 5.75" Sturtevant was then president of Illinois College. Here, he discusses emigration to the 16 non-slaveholding States. "For obvious reasons...we shall leave out of our estimate the colored population of the Free States. The free white population of the Free States was by the census of 1850, in round numbers, 13,000,000...." Re the American Home Missionary Society, "Its function is to follow such families to the heart of the Western wilderness, to the banks of the Columbia, and the gold fields of California....The very conception of a migration to Kansas, or Minnesota, or Oregon implies knowledge, resources, self-reliance in a very high degree....If an uncultivated, uneducated, laboring population does emigrate, it will not carry civilization with it....Its colonies will languish for ages in ignorance and barbarism...." Emory Washburn (1800-1877) served as Governor of Massachusetts, 1854-1855, and wrote a number of legal treatises. He was instrumental in the founding of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, dedicated to teaching science and the trades.

Tipped to the verso of the title-page of our pamphlet is an 11-line holograph note in the hand of Bishop Doane, in part: "The Vestry of each Parish or Church shall at every Annual Convention, pay to the Treasurer thereof, such sums as may be required from them respectively by resolution of the Convention...for the purpose of paying the Salary of the bishop, printing the Journals of the Convention & other incidental expenses...." Added in pencil, "Passed in 1851.

This assembly drew "from six to seven thousand persons, of whom twenty-five hundred were Sunday School scholars." Chairman for the occastion was John D. Thompson, the County Sheriff.
