Illustrated black and white frontispiece, of Captain James Waddell. The text is illustrated with contemporary black and white illustrations and sketches. Dark blue boards with gilt writing on spine. Illustrated dustwrapper, showing sailing ship at berth, blue background with white and black writing on front panel and spine. In January 1865 the Confederate raider 'Shenandoah' berthed at Melbourne. The consequences of this docking had serious consequences to Great Britain and to the whaling fleets of the United States. The edges of the dust jacket I slightly rubbed, and there is a small chip at the top right-hand corner of the spine section, the top edge of the text block is very slightly spotty.
