Mrs. Fetherstonhaugh's (née Carleton) second romantic tragedy after *Kilcorran* also published by Bentley. A scarce, handsome set.

London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1886. Hardcover. Good. First edition. Three volumes. The three-decker first edition in olive green decorated publisher's cloth, gilt spine titles. All three volumes have been professionally re-backed with the original backstrips preserved, corners are bumped, a good clean set. The front boards have light rectangular halos presumably from an old circulating library label. Jessie Fothergill, best known for *The First Violin*, was a popular novelist often compared to Elizabeth Gaskell and George Eliot. A scarce first edition. *Sadleir* 890. *OCLC* locates only six copies.

[Berkeley: no publisher, 1972. Unbound. Good. Broadside. 14" x 14". Old fold, some offsetting, hand inked date ("Oct., 72"). almost certainly incomplete (or more optimistically, perhaps badly designed) probably missing the lower portion. the all-women band Isis, started by the founders of Goldie & the Gingerbreads, recorded three albums, and despite some critical success never really achieved popular success. Presumably this poster (or fraction thereof) is rare.

Each volume printed throughout in dark blue ink. Slightly cocked, small ownership signature in pencil on the half-titles ("G. Newman"), and very light scattered foxing to the foreedges, a bright, fine set. Hector was a popular Victorian novelist, especially in the United States, who published over 40 novels after the death of her husband in 1875. Her plots typically revolve around a young girl torn between money, family, and love - often complicated by a legacy, and a benevolent providence. Publisher's olive green cloth with a decorative design blocked in blind, gilt spine, glaized endpapers. The first volume is inscribed by Hemphill's son Charles H. Hemphill, 1st Baron Hemphill, PC QC (an Irish politician and barrister) to the Duchess of Bedford. Bound in at the back of volume three is a 32-page publisher's "Catalogue of Books" dated February, 1857, followed by a four-page advertisement (with specimen pages from Carlyle's French Revolution and Lever's Harry Lorrequer) dated February 2, 1857. With a one-page ALS by Braddon (written on her personal stationary with an embossed armorial seal) tipped-in on the front free endpaper of volume one. Toning to the endleaves, spines are gently cocked, splitting at the hinges, else still a good, sound set. Scarce in the trade. *OCLC* locates only three sets.

Publisher's dark-green cloth blocked on the front cover and spine with overall floral pattern in silver, lettered on the spine in silver. Early owner's signatures on the front pastedowns and free endpapers, light staining and foxing to the endpapers, rubbing to the boards and one stain to the front cover of the first volume, overall a near very good set. Published anonymously, the Bentley Private Catalogue of June 13, 1892 gives the author's real name. The daughter of a Wesleyan minister, John Fletcher, she married a minister of the United Free Church of Scotland, Robert A. Watson. A scarce set in the original publisher's binding. *Wolff* 7078.

Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half-titles, and with a contemporary pencil note (by the recipient?) on the verso of the front free endpaper. The gold on the front cover of volume one is moderately rubbed, else a bright, near fine set. *Wolff* 2288.

With the original printed paper wrappers, bound in contemporary dark purple three-quarter morocco and marbled paper boards, top edge gilt. Light scuffing to the board edges, light soiling to the wraps, about near fine. A handsome copy in a custom fine binding with seven leather inlays on the spine.

New York: C.S. Francis and Co, 1845. Hardcover. Fine. First edition, first state. Small clipping on the second blank, small pencil name on the title page, a lovely, fine copy. The second of two separately published volumes of Child's writings first published as a series of columns in *The National Anti-Slavery Standard* between 1841 and 1843.

Publisher's advertisements on two pages at the back of volumes two and three. Early owner initials in light pencil on the topedges, volume two gently cocked, a bright, about fine set. Carter was the author of three domestic romances, all published by Bentley. Born in Yorkshire in 1853, the daughter of Thomas Carter, a magistrate and retired silk mercer, she became friends with Ellen Gissing (mother of George Gissing) and in 1912 she published extracts from Gissing's letters to her in Thomas Power O'Connor's *T.P. Winter married first muckraker Lincoln Steffens and later novelist Donald Ogden Stewart. The English edition is very uncommon, particularly in jacket.

London: The "Review of Reviews, 1896. Hardcover. Very Good. Periodical magazine. Two bound volumes each containing 12 consecutive monthly issues (January-December). Thick quartos. Contemporary half polished leather and cloth boards, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. Wear to the board edges and corners, the 1896 volume lacks the front free endpaper, else very good. Founded and edited by the great Victorian reform journalist William Thomas Stead, *The Review of Reviews* was the first true tabloid magazine that reached a global audience. A pioneering investigative journalist and feminist, Stead was the first editor to employ female journalists, and accordingly there are many articles from both volumes that profile several of the leading suffragists of the day. Like Rupert Murdoch, he wielded considerable political influence, and was at the time the best known Englishman who went down in the Titanic. A handsome set.
