The highlight of the sale was an "important oil portrait" of George Washington by Rembrandt Peale, once owned by James Ross Snowden, Director of the U.S. Mint.

Theater program for West is East, a two-act musical comedy produced in 1927 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and featuring an all-male cast including cross-dressers in leading and supporting roles. Set on an Arizona dude ranch, the play featured such characters as "a striving youth from Beacon Hill," an "embryo engineer," "Gonzales...ze gr-greatest man in Mexico," and "Peg Murphy a Follies girl, gold digging in the West." The play was written by two M.I.T. students: Philip K. Bates and G. Elbern Hopkins. Program of lectures ending the first session of the academic year at McKendree College, a Methodist-affiliated school in Lebanon, Illinois. The college was founded in 1828 as Lebanon Seminary, changing its name to McKendree College in 1830 after Methodist bishop William McKendree (1757-1835). Twenty-eight student presenters are identified by name and their hometowns. Topics they declaimed upon include the "Mexican War," "Emigration," "Fourth of July," "Female Influence," "Advance of Science," "John Adams' Prophecy," "Illinois," and "Wealth of America."

Isabel Fiske Conant a.k.a. Isabella Fiske Conant Three typed sonnets and a typed letter by prolific late 19th and early 20th century poet Isabel Fiske Conant (1874-?). One sonnet, "At Edward MacDowell's Grave," celebrates the memory of the composer and founder of The MacDowell Colony of artists in New Hampshire. Appropriately for a composer, the poem evokes musical imagery: "I leave a wild-rose where he rests and sleeps, And yet I know he is not truly here More than in winter-pines' symphonic deeps, Or in arpeggios of the summer year..." Lynn, Massachusetts: Published by J.F. Ingalls, c.1885. [32]pp. Oblong Pamphlet. 4½ x 6½ inches. Decorated printed wrappers; side stapled. Illustrations. Damage and minor losses to wrappers and in margins of some leaves, not affecting text or illustrations; Good. Late Victorian American textile design and pattern book for decorative knotting and needlework. The techniques of macramé and rick-rack stitching and trimming are described and projects using these techniques are demonstrated. The projects include tassel making, a border design for canvas, a thread and needle case, a sachet and pin cushion, a "fancy cushion for toilette set," a lap robe, and a "tidy of ribbon and lace," a kind of doily. With publisher's ad for worsted cross-stitch patterns, "New 1885 Edition ! Extra Pages!"

Pictorial wrappers with some general rubbing and minor soil; rubber stamp to title-page from 1966 book sale; good. Bertha M. Clay was the pseudonym of Charlotte M. Brame (1836-1884).  A modern-day edition of this book notes that "under a variety of pen names, author Charlotte M. Brame wrote hundreds of romance short stories and novels in the mid- to late-nineteenth century. A Mad Love is a wonderful tale of against-all-odds romance that will enthrall fans of classic Victorian-era love stories." This undated edition, issued circa 1900, is unrecorded in OCLC, which has only recorded a few copies of editions printed in New York during this period.

Cleveland: The Arthur Westbrook Company, (1908), but c.1912. 97, [2]pp. "Beadle's Frontier Series" No. 21. Pictorial chromolithographic wraps; side stapled. 7 x 5 inches. Printed on pulp paper. Brief wear at head and tail of spine; small losses at corners of some leaves, not affecting text; brief separation of rear wrapper along upper joint; good to very good. Twenty-first title in "Beadle's Frontier Series" of dime novels first published 1908-1910, but here re-issued by Arthur Westbrook c.1912. The plot involves the Native American Chiricahui Comanche tribe and is set in the Colorado River Valley in the Llano Estacado or Staked Plains region of eastern New Mexico and northwestern Texas. The somewhat incongruous cover shows what appear to be Kentucky-like frontiersmen with buckskin fringed coats and leggings and a powder horn. Ref. The Dime Novel Companion: A Source Book - J. [America. ca 1909]. Postcard. 3 x 5½ inches. Color halftone. Very good. "Pawnee Bill," started his Wild West career with Buffalo Bill Cody in 1883. He later created "Pawnee Bill's Wild West" with his wife May Manning. Despite initial financial struggles, he gained recognition by leading the Boomer Movement into Oklahoma in 1889. This led to a successful show, "Pawnee Bill's Historical Wild West," and a later collaboration with Buffalo Bill Cody in 1908, forming "Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Pawnee Bill's Great Far East."

[America, c.1920s]. Mammoth Photograph. Approx. 25 x 30 inches. Sepia tone. Very good. Poignant, an unusual, extremely large-format or "mammoth" studio photograph of an American bridal party. We've never seen a wedding photo so large. Even the wedding party is immense. In this oversized studio photograph-over 5 square feet-we see the bride and groom; the best man and two groomsmen; a maid of honor and sixteen bridesmaid's; a boy ring bearer; and five flower girls. That's 28 people! A wonderful photograph for its unexpected, striking effect.

Lieberman was a Russian Jew who emigrated to America as a young man. he is noted for his 1916 poem "I Am an American." In 1940, Lieberman joined the New York City Board of Education, and this copy was inscribed and signed by him while he was there: "To Louise Veo whose presence brightened the ninth floor of the Board of Education building, with best wishes of the author. Elias Lieberman."
