Ribbon typescript, signed at the end by Isherwood, of his review of the book H.G. Wells: Prophet of Our Day by Antonia Vallentin (John Day, 1950). The review was first published in the magazine "Tomorrow" and subsequently reprinted in the collection Exhumations (1966).

At this time Pete Seeger had left the Weavers and the photo shows Lee Hays, Ronnie Gilbert, and Fred Hellerman along with Erik Darling. Although the Vanguard label released "The Weavers at Carnegie Hall, Vol. 2," the recordings were largely used from other performances.

This was published 35 years ago, four years before Man With a Bull-Tongue Plow -- these poems written in High School at the steel mills and in the army barracks and in college. This book seems far away and long ago for me to be signing it now.

Los Angeles: Bridgers-Robertson-Schmidt Defense Committee, 1950. Ink notation on address side (unaddressed), otherwise fine. Postcard, 7-1/4 x 5 in., printed on both sides. Announcement of a mass-rally at LA's Olympic Auditorium that featured appearances of Harry Bridges and his two co-defendants, along with their legal team of Vincent Hallinan, James Martin MacInnis and Robert W. Kenny. A prominent and charismatic labor leader as head of the longshoreman's union, the Australian-born Harry Bridges was prosecuted and convicted under the notorious Smith Act for having denied on his naturalization application having ever been a member of the Communist Party. Fellow unionists J.R. Robertson and Henry Schmidt acted as character witnesses for Bridges and were convicted criminal fraud and conspiracy, verdicts that were eventually overturned in 1953. The Bridges case became one of the most high-profile of the red-scare era.

How Can We Defend America? Willkie and Roosevelt, and A Program for Peace & Security.
