Scarce with less than a dozen copies held worldwide per Worldcat in May 2021.

New York: Henry Holt & Company, 1923. First trade edition. Wear to the edges and dampstaining to the bottom portion of the spine and covers, with contemporary ownership inscription. Very Good, lacking the extremely scarce dustwrapper.. Signed and inscribed by Frost on the flyleaf. One of Frost's most notable books and winner of his first Pulitzer Prize.

First edition. An expose on the underworld of Victorian London. "It will certainly astonish the reader to find what innumerable sins are committed daily and nightly [in London]." The Observer, Sunday, May 30, 1869. However, as later scholarship notes, "annals of the slums . . . were social reportage that was meant to supply unpleasant facts to those unlikely to obtain them for themselves. . . [and were] often a thin camouflage for other things, like the accelerating alarm felt at the approach of dangers such as spiritual and moral destitution." Very good in publisher's mottled-grey printed wrappers with some browning to wrappers and chafing to upper corner (where it appears some penciling was erased).. First edition. Lytton Strachey's copy, with his faded penciled ownership signature to the head of the upper wrapper and with his Dora Carrington-designed bookplate to the verso. Shortly before theirs deaths in 1932, Carrington wrote in her journal, "As I stuck the book plates in with Lytton I suddenly thought of Sothebys and the book plates in some books I had looked at, when Lytton was bidding for a book and I thought: These books will one day be looked at by those gloomy faced booksellers and buyers.
