Hardcover, no jacket, in remarkably clean and well-preserved condition. The cover of the binding is made from the fabric used to fashion the judo uniform jacket. Corners slightly bumped, turning in the page corners of the outer pages a bit. The text is clean. Black titling is bold and nearly undamaged, with just a few spots of wear, including to the 'O' in Judo. Spine not dulled or faded. Binding solid with sound, uncracked hinges. Former owner's 1958 gift inscription from father to son to rear pastedown (from Yokohama, Japan -- upon the son's earning his green belt in Judo). Full of b/w illustrations of demonstrations of techniques by the author. 245 pp.

San Francisco, CA: Paul Elder and Company, 1911. Hardcover. Good. 75pp., 35 mounted plates. Pages are clean and sharp, with affixed artwork likewise. Covers have some edgewear, one board corner worn through, a water stain to bottom front board corner. The burlap binding at spine is not in bad shape; it has some small splits at the corner folds but is not heavily frayed. Some of the cover titling and cover illustration are rubbed out, but a relatively low amount of each. A rustic-looking book that has seen some wear but is solidly intact.

Free of internal marks, with a solid binding and uncracked hinges. Matte paper goldenrod jacket price clipped, shows some rubbing, creases toward bottom of front panel, a few short closed tears plus a 2" closed tear top of front panel now repaired with archival tape from the inner surface. Presents well in new mylar dust jacket protector. 236 pp with index and list of 64 b/w illustrations, taken from the author's partner's diary. Augmented by many editor's notes, Windeler's diary is reproduced verbatim, and depicts the struggle for existence along the Feather and Yuba rivers from 1849 to 1853 and includes several accounts of frontier justice, hangings, and murders. The narrative makes significant contributions to our knowledge of the gold rush period and makes for entertaining reading.

First Edition stated on copyright page, with P6 code printed in the gutter of p. 199 of the text indicating the first state. A great copy, which I will try to describe thoroughly to prospective buyers. This is a bright and square copy in maroon cloth that has a few minor spots of rubbing/soil remnants, perhaps as if the book was handled a bit outside of the jacket. The book seems too tight to have been read. The gilt titling to the spine is bright, with a few small rubbed imperfections in "Carrie". Light rubbing to cloth at bottom of boards, but not nearly worn through. Rear paste-down has a small, 5mm defect at the corner, where it is torn but still pasted down. Original, price-clipped dust jacket is bright with some edgewear, crinkling at lower front flap fold, with a piece of scotch tape also having been applied to the inside… Leer más
