This is a review copy, fine in blue boards with paper labels on the front board and the spine; the near fine dw is lightly dulled on the spine with a small hole on the front spine fold. Uniquely SIGNED by thirty poets from the Society, some of the writers signing multiple times! There is a pencil notation on the verso of the front board indicating the book was a gift from Gustav Davidson, the Secretary of the Society and the editor of the book; he has signed the book on the title page. Some of the other signees include Leonora Speyer, A.M. Sullivan, Alfred Kreymborg, John Hall Wheelock, Joseph Auslander, and Louis Ginsberg, among a score of others. The recipient of the book lists, in pencil, on the rear end paper and rear board, the names, dates and page numbers of each individual signature, spanning ten years! A absolutely distinctive item!

Limited edition, 1 of 600 Advance copies printed for friends of the author and publisher for Christmas, 1961. The books were unnumbered and unsigned. This copy is fine in marbled paper boards and a green cloth backstrip, absent dw as issued. Inserted in the book is a handwritten presentation slip on Greene's stationary "Dear Sybil, Happy Christmas to you both, Love Graham." Sybil is Dame Agnes Sybil Thorndike, Lady Casson, renowned English Shakespearean actress and great friend of Greene and George Bernard Shaw, who wrote Saint Joan specially for her. An absolutely unique association copy!

In gathering research for two novels set in Africa ( A Burnt-Out Case and The Heart of the Matter) Greene kept two journals that were never intended for publication, but appear here in print for the first time. The book is nearly fine with a light touch of fading to the red spine; the near fine dw is lightly soiled on the spine, with a 1 and 1/2 inch cut on the front panel neatly repaired with conservators tape on the verso. Greene has briefly INSCRIBED the book on the title page.

Full page INSCRIPTION by Auchincloss on the front end paper to "my friend and colleague, Alexander Jay Bruen" in which he notates two errors in the book: at the bottom of the inscription he signs the book first as Louis Auchincloss, and then parenthetically as Andrew Lee.

The author's literary debut. There is a small puncture mark near the bottom of the front board that stops this copy from being fine (duh!), and the otherwise fine dw has a closed but obvious tear across the top of the front flap, though no pieces are missing. That being said, the book presents well, and the dw is solid, showing none of the rubbing or loss of color that it is prone to. SIGNED by Kennedy on the title page.
