1548 Rodolphus Agricola De Inventione Dialectica Dutch Humanism Rhetoric & Logic

Rudolph Agricola was a 15th-century Dutch humanist primarily remembered for his best book 'De Inventione Dialectica". Agricola spent much of his career in education, teaching various subjects and fields; however, his lessons were rooted in rhetoric and language dialect. This propelled him to write his book "On Dialectical Invention" which argued for the use for rhetoric and logic in all facets of education. According to Hamilton,
"The significance of De inventione dialectica for the history of argumentation is that it assimilated the art of dialectic to that of rhetoric. Agricola focused on the topics rather than the analytics of Aristotle and on Cicero."

This 1548 edition is exceedingly rare, especially in the Americas. Only one copy is found in any institution in the Western Hemisphere, per the USTC.

1561 Philipp Melanchthon 1ed Epitaphs on Death Luther Wittenberg Reformation

"But faith is not belief in the history of Christ, as the godless think, but belief in the purpose of Christ's incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection."
― Philipp Melanchthon, Loci Communes

Philipp Melanchthon was a 16th-century Protestant theologian known for his role in the Protestant Reformation. His book 'Loci Theologici', or more simply a system of theology, was a treatise many church reformers produced. Throughout the mid-1500s, numerous other theologians wrote and lectured on Melanchthon's 'Loci' and provided commentary on his life and work, especially following his death in 1560. One such work was "Orationes epitaphia et scripta" – a collection of writings, speeches, letters, and epitaphs on the death of Melanchthon. This 1561 first edition provides first-hand accounts of Melanchthon's last days as well as the impact his ministry had on Lutheranism and Protestantism in Europe.

1549 FAMED Alciati EMBLEMS Emblematica Herbal Medicine Mythology 100s Woodcuts
"Plenitudo potestatis nihil aliud est quam violentia." (The fullness of power is nothing more than violence).
― Andrea Alciati
An incredible first edition of Alciati's 'Emblemata'. This 1549 edition includes countless woodcut-engraved devices. These illustrations helped inspire thousands of imitations throughout Europe on secular and religious themes. The commentaries on each emblem were written by French scholar Claude Mignault. Devices depict pastoral scenes, cathedrals, military, mythological creatures, and more. 'Emblematica' provides important clues and shows - with brevity of style - concern for the eternal nature of man and human nature. Per Saunders in "The 17th-century French Emblem,"
"Alciato's emblem book went through a large number of transformations from the original very crude and simple form. Its early transformation into a work which was both aesthetically more pleasing and visually more accurate…with a… Leer más

1537 1ed Orthodox Saint John Chrysostom On the Priesthood + Brixius Marburg

A rare 16th-century printing of works of John Chrysostom. Chrysostom was one of the most important Early Christian Church authors and preachers and is most remembered for his sermons and homilies. He preached on many different subjects, but his most frequented topic was helping the needy. Chrysostom calls for followers of Jesus to set aside their material desires to help the poor, often in a way that shamed the rich and guilted them in to giving.
"Do you pay such honor to your excrements as to receive them into a silver chamber-pot when another man made in the image of God is perishing in the cold?" (Chrysostom in Liebeschuetz)

One of his most important treatises was 'On the Priesthood' in which he describes his experiences becoming a priest and living as a priest. Interestingly, this work was popular during his lifetime as he made references to it in his other works.
This extremely rare 16th-century edition of 'On the… Leer más

Uppsala: Almqvist & Wiksells, 1949. Large octavo, pp 338, a very occasional light and discrete pencil note in a margin, otherwise incredibly clean internally, paperback, the covers in very good condition. RARE - a fine copy. [Macer Floridus is the alleged pseudonym of Odo de Meung, a French cleric and physician who lived during the 11th century and was the presumed author of the herbal poem De Viribus Herbarum (On the properties of plants). The use of "Macer" alludes to the Roman poet, Aemilius Macer (16 B.C.), who authored a poem on remedies for those afflicted with wounds from poisonous serpents. The herbal, commonly referred to as the Macer Floridus, was written in Latin hexameter verse and presented the medicinal uses of plants. The rhyming verse aided doctors and apothecaries in memorizing medicinal recipes and treatments, which made the herbal popular among those who practiced medicine during the Middle Ages. The Macer Floridus is recognized as a signal of revival in botanical… Leer más
