Damon in Constantinople, Turkey, typed letter hand-signed "Beatrice Webb" above typescript Mrs. Sidney Webb,-1 page/about 90 words, 8" x 10", folds as mailed, returned address typed in Passfield Corner, Liphook, Hants [Hampshire] [crossed out 44, Grosvenor Road, Westminster Embankment], December 30, 1929, typescript in lower left corner "T. J.Damon Esq.,Robert College, Constantinople", Beatrice Webb thanks Theron and his wife for their appreciation of her book [presumably "My Apprenticeship" published in 1926], recollects a visit with the Damons, and mentions a couple of political matters, letter reads in part. "[She and her husband Sidney] often think of that lovely Bosphorus palace and its pleasant inhabitants, and we wonder whether there are any new developments of hostility or friendliness from the present Turkish Government…fortunate to have such [schools] provided for their young people without cost to themselves…" /// NOTES: BEATRICE WEBB / MRS. SIDNEY WEBB: 1858-1943, English sociologist, economist, socialist, labour historian and social reformer…coined the term collective bargaining…one of the founders of the London School of Economics and played a crucial role in forming the Fabian Society…With the Fabians' support, Beatrice Webb co-authored books and pamphlets on socialism and the co-operative…began a vegetarian salon for socialists. By 1908, she was a vice-president of the National Food Reform Association. (wikipedia); THERON JOHNSON DAMON: 1883-1975, lived on and off in Turkey in the first decades of the 1900s and traveled widely in the Middle East and Europe, during which times he worked variously as a teacher at Robert College in Constantinople, a journalist, an agent for the Vacuum Oil Company and U. S. government, and antiquities dealer…During World War I, he worked for the Office of War Information (OWI)…In November 1918, he was assigned to the peace-making council at Versailles. Early in 1919 he returned to Constantinople in an official capacity during negotiations, returning to Paris where he was present at the signing of the peace. In October 1919 he was 'demobilized.'
