New Hampshire: Self-published, 1895. Hardcover. Very Good. Sister Mary Cornelia.

A fascinating record of an adventurous tour by a nun, Sister Mary Cornelia from Mount Saint Mary, Manchester, New Hampshire, recording a Trip to Southern California in 1894. She recorded various places in California, Nevada, and New Mexico. Compiler: Sister Mary Cornelia (1834 - 1912)

Gray scrapbook with hinged plates; 20 leaves, with matter glued to both sides. 24.5 by 18.5 cm; 9.75 by 7.25 in.), cloth with gilt lettering ("Scrap Book"). The book has a shelf lean; wear on spine edge and corners; stain on edge of the front of a black substance.. Her scrapbook comprises photographs, photographic reproductions, clippings of drawings, and other pictorial matter with hundreds of images. Most of the photographic images are halftones, but there are some original albumen or early silver photographs.

The original photographs include views of the Los Angeles Court House; Ramona's House (a small copy photograph); Main Street Looking North with the L.A. Post Office; Los Angeles looking down Broadway from the Court House; San Gabriel Mission (another small copy photo); Los Angeles' Chinatown on a Saturday evening; a view of Redlands; Riverside; Hotel Rubio Music Hall, Los Angeles; Ribbon Rock Falls, Rubio Canyon; Great Incline on Mount Lowe Railroad; "City on the Mount" Mt. Lowe Ry., and a few others. Sister Mary Cornelia's journey started October 17th, 1894 and via Overland Route ended in Southern California. The last dated photo is "January 26, 1895 Evening in Chinatown". Most of the time Sister Mary Cornelia spent in Southern California (San Bernardino, Los Angeles, San Gabriel Mission, San Diego, Coronado, Long Beach, Redlands, Riverside, Mt. Lowe). She also visited Santa Fe (New Mexico), and Las Vegas. There are nine large original photographs (5 by 8 in.), two smaller photos, and seven small copy photos.

All of the original photographs are of Southern California. There are also dozens of clippings, the majority of them with captions done by Sister Mary Cornelia. She marked the hotel she stayed in, places she visited, such as Los Angeles Chinese "Kindergarten. Presbyterian Church, December 26, 1894", "Wife of Chinese Minister", and many more.

various: various, 1970. Three Ring Binder. Good. We offer a large archive of fireworks labels dating to the 1970s, including 175+ labels collected from various manufacturers and countries, mostly India and China, but with a few from Japan and even America. The archive is contained in two binders labeled "FIREWORKS LABELS ALBUM NO. 3" (containing 82 labels mostly of Indian origin), and "FIREWORKS LABELS ALBUM NO 4." (99 labels, mostly of Chinese/Macau origin with a few from Japan and America). This archive was collected in the 1970s (presumably by someone in the fireworks business), and placed in old photograph albums with the "magnetic glue" format which has transferred to the backs of many of the labels. In some cases lines are visible on the front of the labels. We've left the labels in the albums as is, partly because there are some penciled notes on some pages indicating a date or (in album 4) "PGII CONV" presumably for the Pyrotechnics Guide annual conventions. They are easily removable, but… Leer más

Descripción:
Single leaf (270 x 212 mm) with copper-engraved plate (198 x 147 mm); very lightly foxed, 2 small paper flaws (of which the larger 8 mm), but overall a very good copy.
Very rare engraved broadside advertisement for a Venetian chocolatier. An attractive print, the advertisement offers 'chioccolatta d'ogni sorte' for a variety of prices, beneath an internal view of Guado's premises in Calle Larga in San Marco. Set within an ornamental rococo frame with the shop's 'la nave' sign depicted above, the scene shows a wealthy clientele in a spacious chocolate-house, drinking hot chocolate, with beans being ground in the foreground.
OCLC shows no copies of the engraving. The original copper plate survives in the Civica Raccolta delle Stampe Achille Bertarelli, in Milan.

Redlands, California: Pure Gold, [1955]. Stapled wraps. Very good. [12p.] Small chips to wrap edges. The Mutual Orange Distributors (MOD) was founded in Redlands, California, in 1906 as a cooperative marketing association representing citrus growers in California. Within a few years, the coop included citrus growers in western Arizona. In 1955, MOD changed its name to Pure Gold, originally the brand name for fruit grown by the approximately 2,500 MOD growers. Sunkist took over the Pure Gold trademark when the co-op closed in 1987 due to housing developments replacing the citrus fields and the shrinking number of packing plants. This booklet explains the history of the citrus-growing culture in California and Arizona and provides information on the variety of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit grown and their cultivation and packaging. A map on the back shows the regions represented by the Pure Gold cooperative. Scarce, none located in OCLC. B&w illustrations and halftone photographs. (11"x8-1/2")

Adams was born to Nathaniel Dickinson Adams and Harriet (Hastings) Adams in Shutesbury, Massachusetts. On his mother's side, he was a descendant of Thomas Hastings who came from the East Anglia region of England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634.[1] Adams received his early training in the Amherst, Massachusetts public schools and Phillips Exeter Academy. He graduated from Amherst College in 1872. In 1873 Adams traveled to Europe to study and write. In 1874 he then moved to Heidelberg, Germany to pursue the Ph.D. degree. There he was influenced by Johann Gustav Droysen and Johann Kaspar Bluntschli, the latter also becoming his mentor. Heidelberg did not then require a thesis from its doctoral candidates, instead it required an oral examination, for which he chose political science for his major field (Hauptfach), with two minors… Leer más
