The 1st Canadian Division in the Battles of 1918. Compiled by Captain J. D. Craig, M.C. Published by Barrs & Co., London, 1919. Card cover stapled booklet. 8vo up to 9½" tall. 55 pages with maps, photographs and a chronology. Laid in: 8vo up to 9½" tall folded card program entitled: Final Order of the Day by Major-General Sir Archibald Cameron MacDonell Commanding 1st Canadian Division. Laid in: 16" by 13" GUEMAPPE Intelligence Log Target Map 20-8-18 with Trenches corrected to 27-7-18 by the Field Survey Battalion, Royal Engineers 6741. Map is of Sections 32-34 at a scale of 20000 with "Change of colour: German trenches in blue" indicated at top; reverse of map contains a blank space for sketching and list of intelligence to complete such as allied and enemy positions, estimated casualties, requirements for supplies, artillery etc. Guemappe is a village, 800 metres south-west of the straight main road from Arras to Cambrai and saw heavy battles during the war; The 2nd Canadian Division captured the village of Guemappe on August 26, 1918 in the Second battles of Arras.
All three items are in very good condition. Booklet has light soiling and creasing to card covers; light creasing to contents which are otherwise fine without tears or marks; pages all firmly attached. Order of the Day has light creasing, ruffling to edges and rear panel with "The Old Red Patch" has small numbers/figures in black ink; no tears or other markings. Intelligence Log Target Map has light creasing and folds with a few small closed tears and pin holes.
From the booklet's Preface: "This preface would be incomplete did it not place on record the grateful thanks of all ranks of the division to our chief, the Corps Commander, Lieut.-General Sir Arthur W. Currie, for the extraordinary skill and ability with which he conducted these battles. And especially do we wish to place on record our appreciation of the care and solicitude which he has evinced at all times for our lives and general well-being. To the Officers, non-commissioned Officers and men of the 1st Canadian Division, this little book, compiled by Captain J. D. Craig, of the General Staff, is dedicated". From the end page: "The Printing of this History is made possible by funds from the Canadian Y.M.C.A. One copy is given to each man in the 1st Canadian Division.
