Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc, 1798. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Sections of two sets (acquired from the Henry Ford Museum years ago by Leaves of Grass Bookshop ABAA in Ann Arbor) of the original 1798 printing of the First American Edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Some old water staining, a few tears, almost all volumes include plates, all uncut copies. Rebound in 1991 into 125, quarter-leather folio volumes by master binder Arno Werner (with 18 volumes retained by the compiler), making 107 volumes offered here for the first time, as one lot, with a modern title-page printed in 2002 laid-into (loose) each volume. Including: A: 13 Volumes (including thin Vol 1 with Frontispiece, t.p. & Preface; and 2 copies of this Vol ASS-AST, mostly on Astronomy, each with 31 plates & index) A-B: 1 Volume; B: 7 Volumes; C: 14 Volumes (Including thick Vol CHE-CHE, almost all on Chemistry, complete, 4 plates, one folding); C-D :1 Volume; D: 7 Volumes (including 2 thin copies, DRA-DWI, each with 5 plates); D-E: 1 Volume; E: 9 Volumes; E-F: 1 Volume; F: 5 Volumes; F-G: 2 Volumes, 2 copies of pages 401-624, including a map of France + 6 plates (birds, furnace, gages, plant, 2 gas mechanisms); G: 1 Volume with main sections of Geography (pp 630-662 with plates), Geometry (pp 663-686 with plates), Germany (with map); H: 4 Volumes (including 2 copies of HOA-HYD, with Holland, Homicide, Horsemanship, Husbandry & one bird plate); H-I: 1 Volume (including t.p. to Volume 9); I-J: 1 Volume (with Ireland & Italy maps); L: 1 Volume; L-M: 1 Volume; M: 4 Volumes (including thin vol pp481-552, Music, complete with 9 plates); M-N: 1 Volume; N: 1 Volume; P: 7 Volumes (including thicker PAS-PHA, with stained t.p. for Vol 14 & over 10 plates); R-S: 1 Volume (7 plates); S: 11 Volumes (including SCO-SCR, Scotland & map (complete) & 2 copies of SHE-SHO, mostly Ships and Ship-building, with 14 plates each); S-T: 2 Volumes; T: 4 Volumes; T-V: 2 Volumes (2 Copies of pp 537-696); W: 2 Volumes (2 Copies of pp 697-808); W-Z: 2 Volumes (2 Copies of pp 809-945). Total of 107 Volumes in 5.5 standard bankers boxes or 6+ feet of shelf space. This entire set has a shipping weight of approximately 210 pounds that would be sent in 6 different boxes via USPS Media Mail within the United States only (no international shipping) and each box would include insurance for the total sale amount.
