Allan Melville was Herman Melville's brother, literary agent, and when this document was signed, adult roommate. Allan resided in New York with a law office at 10 Wall Street. In 1856, Herman still had several adventures to go before he too would be pulled into the world of documents and scriveners at the Custom House.. An interesting piece of Melvilliana. Fine.
