"Simplicissimus," a sweeping picaresque epic set in the violent period of the Thirty Years War, was first published at Mompelgard in 1669 and is universally regarded as one of the greatest works in German literature, and its author, Hans Jacob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen (1621-1676), the greatest German novelist of the 17th century. A handsome three-volume edition, published by Insel Verlag at Leipzig in 1908, with four aquatint illustration plates by Max Klinger, two of them fold-outs. Text in German. Blackletter title page design by E. R. Weiss. Very Good Plus. Clean, crisp, bright, titles brilliant. A fine set.
