Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1937. First Edition; rare collectible volume. 8vo size brown clothbound hardcover with orange titles on spine and front cover; 315 pages. Firmly bound. Author Jessie Fenton tells the fictionalized story of Lonny, a teenage boy gone bad, from his petty thievery in his hometown to his hopping a freight train and befriending a man who teaches him to pass bogus check and steal cars within hours of their meeting. Lonny ends up in reform school, becomes a hardened criminal and kills a man during a bank robbery. He dies in the electric chair at Sing Sing. We find the book has some of that classic film noir vibe. Dusty top, light wear or soil to cover and spine; some fingermarks on cover. Foreword by John F Hines, President Located in Springfield, Massachusetts, American International College (AIC) was founded in 1885 as the French Protestant College. In 1892, it became the first college in New England to admit women. Covered with a glassine or wax paper wrapper which has kept this slim volume in great condition. Pencilled price on fep. Some light soil to edges underneath wrapper and a small publisher's blemish (a small raised area) on front cover. The glassine wrapper has tears, chipping and some foxing on top front. Separation inside front and back hinges. Color map of The Albert N'yanza has been mended with tape in one spot and has an inch tear along fold in another spot. Every page has a beautifully decorated engraved border: angels, cherubim, seraphim at the top and an open bible centered among flourishes at the bottom. There are also several hundred full page black and white engraved illustrations. Dark brown endpapers. Covers are brown cloth with bevelled edges. They are decorated with gilt titles and illustrations and black decorations. Ingram Cobbin (1777 - 1851) was an English minister. When ill heath forced his retirement from the pulpit, he turned to writing hymns and biblical and scholastic works. New York: J. K. Wellman, 1846. Rare and highly collectible, contains one the first printings of Edgar Allan Poe's (listed as Edgar A. Poe in the table of contents) famous poem, The Raven (nevermore.) The last entry in the book is Poe's on pages 376-378. Other authors inlcude: John Greenleaf Whittier (John G. Whittier here) with The Ballad of Cassandra Southwick. Quarter leather (leather extended spine and corners) and black marbled (or rubbed) boards. 378 pages with mostly bright pages with tanned borders - pages in center tend to be bright with tanned boarders and some light foxing; endpapers are tanned. (Probably steelcut) black and white engravings. Front cover is detached (but present). Leather spine has gilt titles is rubbed and worn at head and heel. A highly desired volume, worth restoring.
