Contemporary polished calf with five spine compartments between raised bands. Red leather label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title; black label in fourth compartment with gilt-tooled author and volume number. Elaborate gilt-tooled decoration in remaining compartments and same border on all boards. All page edges marbled, matching marbled endpapers. Gilt-tooled armorial decoration of the Mercers' School in the center of each front board. The Mercers' School was founded by the Worshipful Company of Mercers in London in the 16th century and operated until 1959. Blank leaf following front endpapers in vol. 1 bears bookplate of the same armorial decoration and written below: "Reward of Merit to Master John Faulkner Mercers School Midsummer 1848." On the following blank leaf is a gift inscription from John Faulkner to his son J. Faulkner, Jr., dated 1894. Engraved bookplate on each front fixed endpaper of J. Faulkner, Junr. In Very Good- Condition: leather is rubbed, most heavily at corners; loss at edges of black spine label on vol. 2, with minor loss from other label edges; solid and clean. Attractive set with interesting provenance.
