The story of Thomas Sutpen who is born to a 'poor-white' family in the West Virginia mountains who runs away to Haiti at age 14. Later he appears in Yoknapatawpha, Mississippi, with a band of Haitians, obtains 100 acres from the Chickaswa Indians, creates a plantation, builds a large house on 'Sutpen's Hundred'. He is obsessed with gaining status in the aristocracy of the South. He goes to great lengths, mostly sordid, to produce heirs for his 'dynasty'. Nobel Prize laureate William Faulkner was born 1897 in Mississippi and died 1962, 313 pages. 8vo. 1990, Vintage International, USA.
Sinopsis
William Cuthbert Faulkner was born in 1897 and raised in Oxford, Mississippi, where he spent most of his life. One of the towering figures of American literature, he is the author of The Sound and the Fury , Absalom, Absalom! , and As I Lay Dying , among many other remarkable books. Faulkner was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1950 and France’s Legion of Honor in 1951. He died in 1962.
