Small closed tear to page E2, light wear to fore-edge of title page. *** William Whiston (1667 - 1752) was an English mathematician, who succeeded Sir Isaac Newton as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge in 1702. Whiston was also an ordained minister, and was rector of Lowestoft from 1698-1699. He was a Boyle lecturer in 1707, in which position he defended the position of biblical literalism. In 1710 he was expelled from the university because of his religious views, in particular his denial of the doctrine of the Trinity, saying it had pagan origins. Scarce.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.
