1789 Pelew Islands George Keate Account of Philippines War Palau South Pacific

George Keate's "Account of the Pelew Islands" is a rare 18th-century description of the Pelew people and Oceania regions of the South Pacific including the Philippines and other Pacific islands. Keate wrote this work was based on the account of Henry Wilson, an English sailor in the East India Company. His ship, the Antelope, was shipwrecked off the Palau islands. Following the premier in 1788, this book became immensely popular to readers in England, a book in which Keate described the local Pelew people as savages and drew in audiences with descriptions of unknown and unfamiliar lands.

Keate's 'Account' gives descriptions of coral Reefs, manners and customs of the natives, details of battles and local wars, weapons and military tactics, canoe making, and more.

This 1789 edition includes a section on the vocabulary of the Pelew language.

A rare French edition of Jean Chardin's "Travels into Persia and the East Indies". This book is regarded as one of the finest works of early Western scholarship on Persia and the Near East. This printing was published at the same time as other French edition, all are considered first editions. In this book Chardin discusses his journeys from Constantinople to the Black Sea, Persia, and throughout the Middle East (Kashan, Iraq; Armenia, Crimea, and Georgia). The end of his journey took him through the Cape of Good Hope, on his way home.

Upon his return, he was considered quite a celebrity in London; though, according to Evelyn he was 'not inclined to talke wonders". He met with famous members of the Royal Society, all of whom took great interest in his voyage. He told them of his witnessing of Abbas II's coronation, and the jewels and fine ornaments he had seen.

Occasional light foxing. Other than as noted, a very good copy.

London: Printed for Captain Wilson; and sold by G. Nicol,, 1789. First octavo edition, the fourth overall, of one of the most popular shipwreck narratives of all times. With this edition the publisher aimed to make Keate's Account available to those who could not afford the previous quarto versions: the text was reproduced verbatim, and the famous portrait of Prince Lee Boo, sketched by Keate's daughter, was re-engraved. In 1783, the Antelope, commanded by Captain Henry Wilson, was wrecked on a reef near one of the Palau Islands, a group previously unexplored by Western forces. The entire crew managed to get safely ashore, where they were well treated by the island's inhabitants and eventually managed to build a small vessel from the wreck, in which they reached Macao. "They took Prince Lee Boo, one of King Abba Thulle's sons, with them to England, where he made a very good impression. Unhappily, in spite of all precautions, he soon died of smallpox" (ODNB). Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering."
