Pale age-browning to text, occasional pale foxing to a few margins, some browning to top inner corner of pages 438-445, otherwise a very good copy. Originally published in weekly parts the same year. FIRST EDITION 1802, 8vo, approximately 210 x 130 mm, 8¼ x 5 inches, engraved title page with hand coloured vignette of a black swan, hand coloured frontispiece of Sydney, plus 13 hand coloured plates, engraved by V. Woodthorpe and showing aborigines, plants, kangaroo, birds including black cockatoo, bird of paradise, mountain eagle and emu, snakes etc., the plate of botany has 5 numbered images and that of snakes has 2, making the total number of hand coloured illustrations 20, there is a further full page uncoloured illustration in the text, slip of the original blue printed wrapper tipped in after title page, pages: (48 - title and contents table, dedication and introduction), 7-505, (1 - blank), lacking half-title and Directions to the Binder, the latter were not always included in this edition, binding as Volume I. Pale age-browning to text, occasional pale foxing to a few margins, fore-edge margin of page 265 torn off and ragged, with loss of first letter on a few words, all easily legible, small light brown stain in margin of 267, top corner of page 301 missing, no loss of text, small repair to top corner of 303, again no loss of text, 1 plate (Manhood) has some small light creases, as though crumpled slightly at some time, another has a tiny closed tear to the margin. George Barrington (1755-1804) was a notorious criminal known as 'The Prince of Pickpockets'. He served several sentences on board the prison hulks at Woolwich before being transported to Australia, where he later became Superintendent of Convicts and High Constable in New South Wales .
