His purpose was to record the customs and practices of the Eskimos before they were changed by 'civilized ways'. He bartered food and equipment for ethnographic items which he transported to Chesterfield Inlet, NWT for shipment to cultural institutions. This book reveals Leden's gift for description, his ability to dramatize the skills of survival, his capacity to understand and care for his Eskimo companions and the animals that shared their lives.
