MacLeish believed that the end of the war marked the beginning of the new world and much of his earlier work focused around understanding the changing world around him. The elegiac poem Actfive explores the challenges MacLeish was facing after the loss of the opportunity of peace due to World War II. In this collection Actfive is placed alongside some twenty shorter pieces.
