British and Polish codebreakers at Bletchley Park had broken the German Enigma cipher, but their staff and resources were small. In October 1941, leading codebreakers, including the outstanding Alan Turing, wrote to Winston Churchill asking for help. He ordered that they be given all they needed, adding the instruction: 'Action This Day'. It was to be a key turning point - their brilliant work is believed to have shortened WWII by up to two years.
