NY: Doubleday, 1923. Hardcover. Very Good. Rare signed first edition of socialist, Piulitzer Prize wiinning playwright Elmer Rice, inscribed on the ffe: "to Leonard L. Hess E. L. R. July 1923". Hess was a NYC author, whose short stories appeared in the American Mercury, Harper's Weekly, The Bookman and The Saturday Review mid-1920s-early 1930s. Rice was one of the founders of the Playwright's Company, along with Mazwell Anderson, Robert E. Sherwood, Kurt Weil and lawyer John F. Wharton 1938. The Adding Machine has been revived in recent years, this uncommon first edition of the play a production of The Theatre Guild. Orange cloth, black stamped titles, lacking dw. Covers soiled, mostly about edges and spine.
