A note following the title page states that at the March 4, 1834 convention a committee of doctors and farmers was appointed to prepare and publish this address. The address sets out, in part, to counter a common idea that alcohol helps farm laborers to get through the heat and hard labor of the harvest -- a misconception which doctors have disputed.
