This unique historical document based on a cache of letters, documents, and personal possessions that only came to light in 1955 follows the lives of General de La Fayette and his wife Adrienne from the time of their marriage as teenagers, through the last years of the French monarchy under Louis XVI, the French Revolution, and the American War of Independence, to their final years, ill and imprisoned in the Austrian Castle of Olmutz. Illustrated throughout with reproductions of contemporary paintings and documents. Appended: Bibliography, Index.
