(iv), 308p; (vi, 292p; (vi, 298p; (i v), 297p. The Adventurer was one of several 18th century English periodicals to publish the essays of Samuel Johnson. This 4-volum e set contains all 140 numbers as in the first edition. Bound in contemporary calf, ribbed spine with gilt labels and double lined borders. 25 of the papers are attributed to Johnson, 70 to Hawke sworth. . and tight overall with only occasional light foxing; the only si gnificant flaw is substantial toning/staining to title page margi ns and end papers. See photos. The covers are poor; substantial s urface wear; leather dried and cracked; front covers partially de tached, substantial chipping to lower front corners of volume 2. .
