Johnson a British explorer, botanist, artist, colonial administrator, and linguist who traveled widely in Africa and spoke many African languages. He was one of the key players in the Scramble for Africa that occurred at the end of the 19th century.

Under the auspices of the British Agent and Vice Consul of Zanzibar, Sir John Kirk, Johnson effected treaties with the chiefs of several local tribes to accept British protection. These treaties would later form the basis of the foundation of the British East Africa Protectorate of 1895. [Buddenbrooks]
Even though as an explorer he did not make any startling geographical breakthroughs comparable to Speake or his friend Stanley, given his fate was to arrive on the scene as the age had begun to wane, he did through his abilities clarify and expand existing information so that he came to known as Kilimanjaro Harry. [Casada]
