Set in the years leading up to and following the Russian Revolution, this diptych of novels traces the fortunes of Jeanne, an actress of the silent screen whose career is cut short and transformed by the events of 1917 in Odessa. 'After Arkadia' is a deceptively simple novel. Although in essence a romance, it's also a cultural history of Russia and France in the 1910s, the years of the Russian Revolution and World War I. Bielski tells her story in clear and concise prose, allowing the reader to experience the heroine's life first-hand without all of the detailed descriptions that bog down a lot of historical novels. The surrounding events are revealed mainly through Jeanne's acquaintances and lovers.
