THE BLACK DOUGLAS was a name that struck fear and terror into early 14th century England during the wars of Scottish independence. Sir James Douglas was arguably the greatest warrior of his age and yet he is relatively unknown alongside other more famous contemporaries such as Robert the Bruce and William Wallace. He was Robert the Bruce's most able lieutenant serving him faithfully through various battles, notably Roxburgh Castle, Bannockburn, where he commanded the right flank of the Scottish army that fought against a vastly superior English Army defeating Edward II comprehensively. The story is told through the eyes of a young blacksmith from Mingary on the west coast who becomes Douglas's equiry and then squire. It is also a story of a historical sword and the friendship between the blacksmith and a Moorish prisoner. The threads of the tale are interwoven against historical events and characters. James Douglas's loyalty to his king was so strong that he promised the dying Robert the Bruce that he would carry his preserved heart into battle and place it in Jerusalem. An intriguing and informative insight into one of Scotland's greatest heroes.
