Sobre este artículo

MP3 Audio CD. Excellent author, short story writer and novelist, Edith Wharton (1862 ? 1937) belonged to one of the richest families in America, and spent a great deal of time in her youth traveling throughout the American continent and Europe. Her talent was apparent at a young age, as she wrote a novella at age 18, and went on to publish many additional novels, novellas, short stories and works of non-fiction. Wharton even won the Pulitzer Prize, and was nominated for a Nobel Prize in Literature three times in her career.

Afterward is one of Wharton?s best known short stories ? a chilling, extremely well-written work of fictional literature that is characterized by Wharton?s impeccable prose elements and distinguished writing style.

The story was written in 1910 and published in The Century Magazine as well as two of Wharton?s own books. The plot is divided into five distinct parts, and tells of an ironic visit that a ghost pays to a character who had long ago committed a serious business transgression. It features an unnamed narrator, a dynamic series of events that will keep you at the edge of your seat and themes that reflect complex internal and external struggles of the characters.

The theme of female and male characters pitted against each other, themselves and society is found throughout this chilling and psychologically complex story throughout the plot line.

Where Wharton really shines, however, is the exemplary suspenseful atmosphere she creates and the realism of the characters. The intense pace of the story is ideally adjusted to keep readers interested without feeling forceful in any way, and the author does an excellent job of organizing and presenting events in a manner that has them flowing easily toward the final conclusion.

Classically Victorian, but also with many elements that may surprise you, Afterward is the perfect horror tale to enjoy on a quiet, stormy night.
