In the late 1930s, in the context of war in Spainthe threat of another great European war and heated politics, this book recounts the story of the lives of three literary women who became entwined through friendship, shared interests, and love. Two were English and lived in Dorset for much of their lives, Sylvia Townsend Warner (1893-1978, writer, Valentine Ackland 1906-1969), poet, and Elizabeth Wade White (1906-1994),Connecticut-born and educated, the future biographer of the poet Anne Bradstreet. The depth of feeling in the affair beween Valentine and Elizabeth caused emotional tumult for all three women, and the after effects of the tumult lived with them for the rest of their lives..
