Please See All Photos. ~ ln 1835, General Martin Perfecto de Cos converted the Alamo into a fortress when he was sent to put down the growing rebellion in Texas. The Texans occupied the Alamo following the surrender of General Cos on December 10, 1835, and called the building the Long Barrack. It was in the Long Barrack that many of the defenders made a valiant stand against the Mexican army at the Battle of the Alamo, 1836. MUSEUM - The Legacy The Long Barrack and the former church are the only original buildings from the time of the battle in 1836. The Long Barrack was restored in 1968 and opened as a museum.
